Tawny, Tawny, Tawny!

Let's get you up on the Brand New Installer!

Do you know how to download things via bittorrent?

Well haven't things moved fast in the past few hours - I now have a stable patched 5.0.4e client, and it automatically gets set to Win98 Compatibility Mode, at least in XP (no idea on vista).

So, those with torrent ability can get our shiny new installer .torrent file upon request.  There should be no changes in the client end, I just have yet to add Razor to the mix.

Announcements / Beta testers wanted!

Right now I have put a little work into a standalone installer that should make it a lot easier for people to get online with Sylvan, but of course it needs testing and at the moment it's basic and low patchlevel (it's based on the release ML rather than patched upto where most people like (5.0.4e is where I aim to get it, but so far am having trouble getting that patched properly).

So what I need are :

  • People who are willing to test the concept and know about .torrent files
  • Ideally some of the above who are vista users to see if it works nicely for them
  • It would be really nice to have some razor users too, to see how razor reacts to a standalone UO

The benefits of a standalone installer :

  • No requirement for any Gateway, ConnectUO or any other app to play
  • None of the panicking if you have patched too far
  • You can install alongside an official client, for PayUO or another shard (who dares admit they play elsewhere? *readies explode macro*)
  • Simple to install, simple to uninstall
  • (Hopefully) deals with the Compatibility mode in the installer automatically

The only real disadvantage is for those who do play more than one shard (Heathens! Infidels!) 'cos they get to install twice and have to have twice as much disk space used.

So, if you are able to download torrents and want to give our shiny new installer a try (I'll want feedback, this is like a book review deal, you get it but only if you feed back), post here and I'll PM you the link if you're in the first few (haven't decided how many testers I need yet!).

Chit-chat / Re: Merry Christmas to all!

One from me for all you Americans just waking up and to everyone who's already into the swing of things... Merry Christmas.

I know I really don't show my face much, but I do feel proud to be hosting the BEST shard out there.

Looking forward to 2008, my ISP will be introducing yet another new service which should give us even less lag.  Something to look forward to.

Knossos : please read http://www.sylvanheart.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=150.msg645 especially the part that says
QuoteTry not to say "this is easy", 'cos there can be knock-on consequences, both technical and balance-related to anything that is suggested.

We use RunUO 1.0 here, not RunUO 2.0, your "updates on the RunUO forums for all of these things" is misinformed* and your attitude of "if it's bothering you just fix it" is totally the wrong attitude to have here.  A more suitable attitude would be "okay, that system has problems, I'll be careful about how I use it".

* misinformed is not the word I would use, but for a public forum, it will have to do.

"A. How the GMs decided it should be done " - yes... I know that...
"B. more balanced" - nope...
A. if you know that, quit moaning.  This is not some whim - it's a considered re-balancing of the system.
B. sorry, yes. End of thread.

I'm sorry but there are obviously two camps here - one camp is happy that we've reduced lag and tipped the scales back so that the challenge still is there but not in an overpowered way, the camp other is annoyed 'cos they rely on it and don't want to adjust to change.  The majority seems to be in the former camp and this discussion is not constructive...

  • Enchanted Grove has been altered so only one grove can be planted at once
  • Vet Rewards now show different name for Leather dye tub and Black dye tub
  • Some fixes to the [dump [sort and [moveitems commands - please don't go experimenting with these commands though - they are known to have bugs and we don't want to crash the shard
  • Various fixes to the ToolBox to allow various new things to be added
  • If a player is in jail, they cannot use [c either

Announcements / Diversity

Sylvan is a wonderfully diverse world, with people from many countries and cultures.  With that in mind....

Please can we keep posts non-religious to respect that diversity.  We would rather the forums don't become a place that people don't feel comfortable.

The answer is simple, don't connect via razor, get CUODesktop to launch razor on connect to sylvan.
