Well The best skills to start off with depends on what you want to do as a toon, If you are going to be a tamer druid I would go Animal taming and veterinary, doing this will make you have to train up both Magery and animal lore in order to use the druids staff but veterinary is considerably harder to raise the animal lore. If healing your pets is not something you need/want to do then go with animal taming and animal lore.
I'm Fairly certain in Sylvan you can only start as a human and then pick your race later. I remember tying to start as an elf and not being able to enter the world with that toon, had to redo the character creation page to make a human hehe.
To train up animal lore I was told that Ardins sheep like to be examined at length... the seem to really like getting attention. and for magery I can give you a training list that will raise Magery, evaluate intelligence and resist spells all at the same time if you like.

There are some powerful items that exist that can raise your magery over 120 but any regular item that you have on will not increase your skills past there 120 cap. As for losing your skill that doesn't seem right and I would assume its a bug.

the location in the last lands was on the south west coast of the large body of water, I was trying to get on my carpet but the land was to high. so i followed the shore line until i fell down a drop and got the ouch message. The drop was close to were the sand begins. from there I couldnt move my carpet left (since i was facing east on it left would have taken me directly into open water). So i said forward, as soon as i did that there was no land around me anymore. I decided to start traveling west (hoping to find my previous location) and landed on the isle where the daemon temple is. found a back door to Trammel it would seem lol, well feluicia

I was exploring the lost land in Fel. I went to fly my magic carpet over the water and as soon as I moved I was now flying my magic carpet in Fel Trammel just off the eastern coast of the island with the daemon temple.

unless its been changed the time is 5pm central.

Great fun! and I like that you have to use your noodle on this quest. well you usually have to hehe but there are some great and different objectives and tasks that make this dungeon awesome fun!, I wont spoil any of it for you hehe but i had a blast!
