I need some gamer folks spreading the word about my kickstarter, it's got 12 hours to go, has a crappy video but is an awesome project.

So this is my one spammy plea to a world I used to help run, please tweet, share, like, reddit, post or whatever you can!

Thanks all, I'll go hide under my rock again now!

Announcements / Forums have moved!
June 19, 2009, 01:15:07 AM
Due to a reinstall of the web server's OS, the forums were moved off to my personal hosting... and now they've moved back again.

As a side-effect, the address of the forums has changed (all old links still work, don't worry, but may not indefinitely).

Please update your bookmarks, favorites, and any links you have pointing here to http://forum.sylvandreams.co.uk/ from http://www.sylvandreams.co.uk/smf/

Okay, for all of you with a different "theme" set in your forum preferences, I did have to reset this because I am doing some hosting refurbishment at the moment.

I have tried to keep downtime to a minimum as well, but unfortunately these things have to happen when they have to happen.

So, to find your old theme, the settings are Profile->Look and Layout Preferences, and select the theme you like.

Hi guys,

Announcements / Beta testers wanted!
April 13, 2009, 02:24:06 PM
Right now I have put a little work into a standalone installer that should make it a lot easier for people to get online with Sylvan, but of course it needs testing and at the moment it's basic and low patchlevel (it's based on the release ML rather than patched upto where most people like (5.0.4e is where I aim to get it, but so far am having trouble getting that patched properly).

So what I need are :

  • People who are willing to test the concept and know about .torrent files
  • Ideally some of the above who are vista users to see if it works nicely for them
  • It would be really nice to have some razor users too, to see how razor reacts to a standalone UO

The benefits of a standalone installer :

  • No requirement for any Gateway, ConnectUO or any other app to play
  • None of the panicking if you have patched too far
  • You can install alongside an official client, for PayUO or another shard (who dares admit they play elsewhere? *readies explode macro*)
  • Simple to install, simple to uninstall
  • (Hopefully) deals with the Compatibility mode in the installer automatically

The only real disadvantage is for those who do play more than one shard (Heathens! Infidels!) 'cos they get to install twice and have to have twice as much disk space used.

So, if you are able to download torrents and want to give our shiny new installer a try (I'll want feedback, this is like a book review deal, you get it but only if you feed back), post here and I'll PM you the link if you're in the first few (haven't decided how many testers I need yet!).

Announcements / Diversity
October 20, 2007, 03:13:59 PM
Sylvan is a wonderfully diverse world, with people from many countries and cultures.  With that in mind....

Please can we keep posts non-religious to respect that diversity.  We would rather the forums don't become a place that people don't feel comfortable.

Announcements / ConnectUO Works! (Mostly!)
June 23, 2007, 02:00:17 AM
Okay folks, I know it's been a long wait... *mutters about ConnectUO needing a windows machine*

BUT

ConnectUO now works correctly (so far as I can tell) with our patches (for those techie people, I had to create an MUO to do it, because their patch system doesn't support custom .exes)

So, all you need to connect to SH with ConnectUO is :

When you run the "ConnectUO Desktop" application, simply scroll down and find us in the list.  Once you have found us, you can add us to your favorites and then click PLAY!

You get our customs, our logon, and the icky blue quest button from ML, along with the extra slot on the paperdoll for the helmet!

Note for people already using ConnectUO who want our prettiness... If you click "DETAILS" by our description, you will find a new option appears called "RESET PATCHES", remember that from the old Gateway days?  I don't know if it's necessary, but it certainly doesn't do any harm to click it - especially if you don't get our custom login screen.

UNIX Airways

Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what kind of plane they are supposed to be building.

Air DOS

Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again. Then they push again, jump on again, and so on...

Mac Airlines

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.

Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colourful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.

Windows NT Air

Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes.

Windows XP Air

You turn up at the airport, which is under contract to only allow XP Air planes. All the aircraft are identical, brightly coloured and three times as big as they need to be. The signs are huge and all point the same way. Whichever way you go, someone pops up dressed in a cloak and pointed hat insisting you follow him. Your luggage and clothes are taken off you and replaced with an XP Air suit and suitcase identical to everyone around you as this is included in the exorbitant ticket cost. The aircraft will not take off until you have signed a contract. The inflight entertainment promised turns out to be the same Mickey Mouse cartoon repeated over and over again. You have to phone your travel agent before you can have a meal or drink. You are searched regularly throughout the flight. If you go to the toilet twice or more you get charged for a new ticket. No matter what destination you booked you will always end up crash landing at Whistler in Canada.

OSX Air:

You enter a white terminal, and all you can see is a woman sitting in the corner behind a white desk, you walk up to get your ticket. She smiles and says "Welcome to OS X Air, please allow us to take your picture", at which point a camera in the wall you didn't notice before takes your picture. "Thank you, here is your ticket" You are handed a minimalistic ticket with your picture at the top, it already has all of your information. A door opens to your right and you walk through. You enter a wide open space with one seat in the middle, you sit, listen to music and watch movies until the end of the flight. You never see any of the other passengers. You land, get off, and you say to yourself "wow, that was really nice, but I feel like something was missing"

Windows Vista Airlines:

You enter a good looking terminal with the largest planes you have ever seen. Every 10 feet a security officer appears and asks you if you are "sure" you want to continue walking to your plane and if you would like to cancel. Not sure what cancel would do, you continue walking and ask the agent at the desk why the planes are so big. After the security officer making sure you want to ask the question and you want to hear the answer, the agent replies that they are bigger because it makes customers feel better, but the planes are designed to fly twice as slow. Adding the size helped achieve the slow fly goal.

Once on the plane, every passenger has to be asked individually by the flight attendants if they are sure they want to take this flight. Then it is company policy that the captain asks the passengers collectively the same thing. After answering yes to so many questions, you are punched in the face by some stranger who when he asked "Are you sure you want me to punch you in the face? Cancel or Allow?" you instinctively say "Allow".

After takeoff, the pilots realize that the landing gear driver wasn't updated to work with the new plane. Therefore it is always stuck in the down position. This forces the plane to fly even slower, but the pilots are used to it and continue to fly the planes, hoping that soon the landing gear manufacturer will give out a landing gear driver update.

You arrive at your destination wishing you had used your reward miles with XP airlines rather than trying out this new carrier. A close friend, after hearing your story, mentions that Linux Air is a much better alternative and helps.

Linux Air

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself.

When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

Announcements / Exploits - Not a happy admin
June 08, 2007, 10:46:42 PM
It has come to my attention that someone has discovered an exploit with the reward trash barrel.  This is most annoying and I have closed the hole.  Anyone found deliberately attempting to exploit bugs in the system will find harsh punishment.

I have a very low tolerance for behaviour such as this, so I will ban first and then Acacia will probably tell me off if I've been too harsh.  You have been warned, don't be caught exploiting on my watch.

On that note, using Razor on slot machines or other money-producing items in a similar way, I do consider an exploit.

Okay folks, made some scripting changes today, the only one that you'll notice is that you can now double-click weapons in your pack and they will arm themselves, including disarming other weapons to do so.

There were some new scripted items for use in our developing felucca, and a bug fixed on the reward trashbarrel too.  There's still the problem of >60k gold, but I'll get to that.

Shard Basics / Sylvan (and others) under Linux
April 29, 2007, 10:59:59 PM
Okay, this isn't a "how to do it" or a step by step guide, just the results of the troubles I've had under Linux getting something to work.

If you're not technical, I really wouldn't bother, because all there is here is hints.

Some notes :

  • The most recent wine is always the best - use yum or apt-get or whatever your distro uses to install the latest version they have
  • Razor - WILL NOT WORK, requires .net and that's a huge nono
  • UOGateway - Requires Internet Explorer, see below
  • Manual - if you use this option, be prepared to have to re-install if you need to connect to another shard!
  • Please don't ask me questions about this stuff - the variations of distribution, configuration etc. of Linux' are too much for me to do anything but repeat what I've said here.

UOGateway :

As I've mentioned above, UOGateway needs IE to work, so, the easiest way to achieve this is to use the wonderful ies4linux script.  This will create "wine bottles" in something like .ies4linux in your home directory.  Use the script to install IE6, then take the "winebottle" (Last I recall ~/.ies4linux/ie6) and use it as the base for your wine installation (~/.wine) - hopefully this command will do that once you have ie6 installed :

mv ~/.ies4linux/ie6 ~/.wine

but make sure you have a backup of your wine config and move it out of the way first if you already have a ~/.wine

Once you have IE installed under wine, you can then procede to install UO and UOGateway.  You might even be able to browse to the forum under IE and click the one-click link!

Manual

Be warned - this is not fun!

Install UO and know where it is.
for EACH and EVERY file in the UO program directory, ensure that the filename is either all uppercase or all lowercase - only use one, don't go for CLIENT.EXE and mapdif1.mul !
extract any patches into a directory and do the same for them.
If the patch directory doesn't contain a login.cfg, copy the original from the UO directory in, and edit it so you only have one server, and port 2593 is standard, instead of 7777
once both the UO folder and the patch folder contain all upper or lower case files, you can then back up if you wish the main program dir, then copy the contents of the patch folder into the main folder.
THEN!  (you thought you were done? haha)
download and run (under wine of course) UORice This will remove the client encryption.
to play, run "wine NO_CRYPT_CLIENT.EXE" (might not be uppercase, I wrote a script back when which uppercased all the files, so I could do this regularly)

Chit-chat / Alder's Amazing Automotive Accident
March 22, 2007, 06:42:46 PM
Hullo All,

The most incredible thing happened to me yesterday :-

Whilst travelling along the motorway near Birmingham in the middle lane (traffic either side of us, 70-75 mph) a big bird (we think canadian goose) plummeted from the sky and through the widscreen, hitting me square in the face, bouncing off and into the back seat.

As you can imagine, I'm a little shaken up, and have many cuts and some bruising... but for the scale of the impact and possible consequences, I'm relatively unharmed.

Now, I have to decide what this means in terms of signs and portents as being hit by a 75mpg goose on the equinox is kinda a big one, and I also wanna know which deities to thank and which to shake my fist at - after all, I'm damn lucky to be alive, but also damn unlucky to have been in that place at that time.

For those with a morbid curiosity, and those who are budding ornithologists who might like to verify the species, I've put a flickr album up of the vehicle and bird taken outside the hospital, which was luckily 5 minutes from the point on the motorway we were at.  Here's the url : http://www.flickr.com/photos/67331000@N00/sets/72157600016156618/

Announcements / Forum Changes
March 12, 2007, 02:06:48 AM
In an effort to reduce the number of spam posts we've been getting, I have upgraded the forum to the latest edition and disabled guest posting and required an activation email...

I've had people be asked to turn cookies on, even though they are... seems that the answer is to clear your cookies if you get that problem.

I've also added a new theme and set it to default, a bit nicer than the default.  This can be changed in your Profile to another theme if you don't like the new one.

If none of them take your fancy, jot me a PM if you can find a nicer one at : http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes and I might remember to get round to grabbing the one you like.  I won't install ones that require source mods or things out of the ordinary, though.

That's right folks, we're back on the main connection.

If you changed your servername/ip the original is 195.149.63.175 .

Apologies for the Lag Bomb I landed you all with but I had to do the whole thing remotely because of a change in my schedule.
