Im not a computer expert, but I usually end up fixing things by fiddling with them and using a bit of common knowledge.

First of all you'd have to narrow down the problem by a process of elimination, since it could be as Skynar mentioned, one of a few things:
1. Cable Problem
2. Video Card/Power Supply/Monitor Problem - therefore a hardware problem
3. Software Problem
4. Heat

We have to eliminate these things one by one, so for No. 1, I suggest taking out all the cables from your computer and attempting to use them to connect your mother's PC up, if everything is still functional, its not number 1.

As for No. 2, try moving your mother's monitor to your PC and connecting that up, and moving your own monitor to your mothers. If your own monitor works on your mother's PC but your mother's computer monitor doesnt work on yours, its a Video Card/Power supply problem! At this point I suggest either hiring a professional or a friend who is knowledgable with computers and will help you.
If you have a PCI graphics card i.e. NOT integrated (if it is integrated, oh dear you might need a new motherboard. Seek a professionals help, or just buy a new CPU hehe) theres still some hope! See if you can swap out the PCI graphics card with another computer's PCI graphics card - MAKE SURE YOU'RE EITHER GROUNDED OR WEAR AN ANTI STATIC WRIST STRAP WHEN YOU DO THIS! (also make sure you're holding the PCI card by the edges). You need to do this since even the tiniest static from your skin could fry the chips on the card. Now with the swapped PCI card, connect it all back up and if it STILL doesnt work its a power supply problem. At this point its time to visit your nearest computer store and buy a new power supply. I suggest you get a professional to connect this up for you, since mis-handling the power supply can give you a nasty shock even if your PC isnt connected :(

Ok, it still doesnt work! :(, it could be a software problem caused by one of many things. Possbily might be a video driver problem, which you really cant fix due to the monitor not wanting to work hehe. At this point it would be a good idea to seek the help of a professional.

Another problem could be heat, I've had a recent problem due to overclocking my PC, it sorta just died hehe. But later I set it back down to normal and let it rest for a while, and the next day, TADA! It was working! It was most likely a heat problem, maybe if you let your PC cool down a bit, there might be some hope. However, if heat was the problem, then theres also the added possibility of the heat damaging some part or chip, in which case we would refer to No. 2.

Hehe that was a long post, I tried to make it as clear as possible (as one can early in the morning o.O), if you have any questions, feel free to ask! We hope to see you back soon on the shard!
